TEACHABLE MOMENTS

Last month I taught my first knitting class. I collaborated with Oui Collective, an amazing initiative founded by Melissa Chantaigne. Oui Collective provides invite-only intimate curated events so that you can feel truly connected. In a society of instant gratification, I feel that gatherings like these are so important because it allows us to slow down, put our phones on vibrate and make authentic connections.

I had a great experience as a first time teacher and I’m glad I didn’t let fear or a flare up of imposter syndrome stand in the way of a beautiful opportunity. I have been knitting consistently for over 12 years and feel that I have perfected my groove and style. However, my first thought when I was asked to teach was - am I good enough. This act of self doubt is a familiar one that lingers around and show up in full regalia when it’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone and stand in a spotlight of change. I’ve been actively working on letting this narrative dissipate by facing fears and challenging myself to dig deeper into my craft.

As a creative, sharing your work/talents is always the hardest part. It’s the part that’s vulnerable, it’s raw and it allows the observer to take a quick peek of your true self. Being exposed in this manner can be difficult but it’s also necessary to do it in the spite of fear so you can realize that it’s not the true story. I now would like to teach more classes and continue to connect with others by sharing my love of knitting. I’m grateful to discover this about myself and I’m open to exploring all of its possibilities. The lesson I learned is moving through fear is always the only option and there’s always growth on the other side.
